Musharraf’s trial only after consensus resolution: PM
* Gilani says no action should be taken that can’t be reversed * Faisalabad-Multan motorway link to prove ‘boon’ for industry
ISLAMABAD/FAISALABAD: The government will try former president Pervez Musharraf under Article 6 of the constitution after it has a consensus resolution from parliament, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani told the National Assembly on Wednesday.
“We should not take any action that can’t be reversed. Our (PPP) chairman has already said that democracy is the best revenge. And we have taken our revenge through democracy. We have come to parliament. Now we should try to strengthen democracy. We should not play to galleries,” he said in response to a demand by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan for a sedition trial.
The premier said he had already forgiven Musharraf despite the fact the latter had kept him in jail for five years. He said he was the first unanimously elected premier in the history of the country and would like to have consensus on all major issues. “All resolutions placed before parliament in the last 17 months were passed unanimously. Even the budget was passed unanimously, so I want a unanimous resolution,” he said.
Motorway: Separately, addressing a groundbreaking ceremony for the Rs 50 billion extension of the M4 motorway to link Faisalabad with Multan, Gilani said it would be a boon for the country’s industry. He said the motorway would pay for itself within a few years, as it would help in rapid transport of goods and merchandise to and from Faisalabad and the rest of the country. zulfiqar ghuman/app
